New York partner Oren Warshavsky was quoted in the March 19, 2010, ABC News article, "Behind 'Runaways' Film, Legal Battle Simmers."
The focus of the article is the litigation surrounding the film, "The Runaways," a biopic of the 1970s all-girl quintet of the same name. To make the movie, the producers optioned band member Cherie Currie's book, "Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway," and secured her life rights. They also got rights from lead singer Joan Jett and drummer Sandy West, as well as those who owned music publishing rights that would be necessary to include the band's hit songs in the film.
Jacqueline Fuchs, who played for the band from December 1975 to June 1977, claims to own a piece of its trademark and went out of her way to disrupt the biopic, according to a New York Post article. Based on her actions, Jett filed a lawsuit against Fuchs claiming tortious interference with business relationships. "She was sending letters around to producers and others who were involved," said Warshavsky, Jett's attorney. "'Sounds like you're doing something including my name and likeness; what are you going to do about it?' That kind of thing," Warshavsky said.
