Denver Hospitality Team partner David Waller authored an article on the growth of the Chinese leisure market in the March/April 2010 issue of Developments magazine, published by the American Resort Development Association. Developments is widely recognized as the leading trade magazine in the hospitality industry.
In “China —An Extraordinary Opportunity Awaits,” Waller wrote, “the World Bank estimates that China will account for 52% of the worldwide growth in the middle class by 2030. Further, some economists estimate that the size of China’s middle class will exceed the total population of the United States by 2015.”
The article also cites survey results that indicate a high level of interest in discretionary spending on leisure travel and vacation ownership among the Chinese middle class. Finally, Waller offers insight on strategies that can help the industry tap into this potentially lucrative market.
