AM Law Daily and The Wall Street Journal Law Blog recently reported U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner called on New York litigation partner and longtime legal adviser John Siegal for counsel relating to his social networking activities that ultimately led to his resignation from Congress. Siegal represented Weiner when the congressman ran for New York City mayor in 2005 and again when he considered running in 2009.
The AM Law Daily featured Siegal’s comments from a letter written to the New York City Campaign Finance Board during the run-up to the 2009 New York City mayoral election.
Siegal highlighted what he described as the chilling effect of New York’s inability to enact campaign finance reform.
“In the last two elections, one mayoral candidate spent more than $158 million—grossly more than any other candidate could spend or has spent not only in New York City but in the history of American mayoral politics,” Siegal wrote at the time.
The quote appeared on June 7. The Wall Street Journal Law Blog detailed Siegal’s biography on June 8.
