Bloomberg News: Obama Says Chinese Tires Decision Isn't Provocative
Washington, D.C., partner Elliot Feldman, leader of Baker Hostetler's international trade practice, was quoted in the September 14, 2009, Bloomberg News article, "Obama Says Chinese Tires Decision Isn't Provocative."
According to the article, President Obama's decision to impose tariffs on Chinese tires, which he said wasn't intended to be protectionist or "provocative," sparked a complaint by China to the World Trade Organization. The decision will impose duties of 35 percent on $1.8 billion of automobile tires from China—the second- largest U.S. trading partner after Canada, which is also the largest holder of U.S. debt with $776 billion.
"The Chinese will be angry,” said Feldman, writer of a blog on China trade. "But there is a limit to their anger." Feldman predicted China won't prevail in its complaint over the tire tariffs because Chinese officials accepted such "safeguard cases" when it negotiated its membership in the WTO.
