Bloomberg TV: The U.S.-China Relationship

Washington, D.C., partner Elliot Feldman, leader of Baker Hostetler's international trade practice, appeared on Bloomberg TV on September 24, 2009, discussing the U.S.-China relationship, in light of the G-20 meeting.

Asked if he believed the recent issues regarding Chinese tire imports would be a topic for discussion at the G-20 meeting, Feldman said, "I think there will be trade issues, but I don't think they'll be very manifest in the public portion of the G-20 summit. I would anticipate a lot of private conversations. I anticipate that the president of both countries will have things to say to each other, but I don't think trade will play much of a role in the public concerns of the G-20."

Noting that climate change would be one of the topics discussed publically at the summit, Feldman was asked if the United States and China would be on the "same side" on that issue. "They're naturally not on the same side, because the United States is a developed country and China is a developing country," said Feldman. "China has a preceived need to be less environmentally friendly now, as it develops, and points to having raised 200 million people out of poverty in the last 20 years, an astonishing accomplishment with no rival in world history. But, both countries burn coal and both countries know that they have to something about the burning of coal."
