The recent appointment of George Stamboulidis, Managing Partner of Baker Hostetler's New York office, to monitor the activities of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 14 and Local 14B, was noted in the December 10, 2009, edition of the Bureau of National Affairs' Construction Labor Report.

The article, "Court Names Former Prosecutors to Oversee New York Operating Engineers Local 14, 14B," notes that Stamboulidis, a former federal prosecutor, was appointed Ethical Practices Attorney and Steven Bennet was appointed Hearing Officer for Local 14 and Local 14B—which have been plagued with corruption allegations for years—as part of a consent decree and judgment the unions and government agreed to Aug. 11, 2008. The terms of the ethical practices attorney and hearing officer are for five years.

According to the article, as ethical practices attorney, Stamboulidis will have the authority to conduct investigations and bring disciplinary proceedings; review appointments; review expenditures and contracts; recover assets; review, reject, or modify election and job referral rules; oversee and monitor elections; and take other steps as necessary.
