CKNW/Corus Radio: Canada's $1B Bailout for Pulp & Paper Industry

Washington, D.C., partner Elliot Feldman, leader of the firm's international trade practice, was featured on CKNW/Corus Radio (Vancouver), on June 17, 2009, discussing the Canadian government's $1-billion support package to help pulp and paper producers in Canada cope with an $8 billion subsidy in the United States that has given competitors south of the border a huge advantage.

Feldman, who has represented several Canadian industry stakeholders on the softwood lumber issue over the years, was asked what he thought of the plan, which some believe may reignite the trade war between Canada and the United States. "I think it's something that has to happen," said Feldman. "I think its part of a larger picture that has to happen, for which the government of Canada is extremely reluctant, and that is it has to go beyond working on the fringes of the softwood lumber agreement. This is a proposal that will address the pulp and paper industry and so there's a distinct, although linked argument as to lumber, and it will raise issues with the pulp and paper industry in the United States."
