Crain's Cleveland Business: Baker Sees Boost from Madoff
Executive Partner Steve Kestner and Paul Eyre, former Managing Partner of the New York office, were quoted in the August 17, 2009, Crain's Cleveland Business article, "Baker Sees Boost from Madoff."
The article profiled the firm and its appointment as counsel to the Trustee, New York partner Irving Picard, overseeing the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC. "Madoff has been a culmination of other major engagements," said Eyre. "Madoff has given us exposure."
Kestner and Eyre were quick to cite Picard's hiring as evidence of the success the firm has found in New York, where it started with three attorneys in 2001 and had 75 at the start of August. Kestner and Eyre discussed the heightened profile of the firm, because of the Madoff engagement, which has increased the number of inquiries by new laterals, law students and clients.
According to Kestner, the work associated with the case could go on for several years, as Picard continues to ferret through the available assets. Besides the New York attorneys working on the case, about 20 people in the firm's Cleveland office are involved with the matter.
Mr. Kestner said the firm is used to taking a low profile and has no plans to force its way into the limelight. However, that approach doesn't stop him and Eyre from noting the benefits the firm will reap if others take note of what they said is the firm's reputation in Cleveland as a "gem."
