Law360: Labor Dept. Updates Family Leave Law
Orlando partner
Patrick Muldowney
was quoted in a November 14
Employment Law 360
article, "Labor Dept. Updates Family Leave Law."
According to the article, the U.S. Department of Labor has made the final adjustments to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which lays out new guidelines for families of injured military members that seek to take unpaid leave from work to help care for them. The new rules drew praise for providing clarity on the issue of military leave, but other revisions to the law were criticized by many worker advocates and employment lawyers.
Muldowney said the rules interpreting the FMLA have long been a source of confusion and consternation for employers, but the proposed amendments would allow employers to handle FMLA leave as they would any other leave in key areas. "This will help employers in administering their leave policies without unduly restricting employee leave rights," he said.
