Jack I. Samet primarily conducts trusts, probate and estate litigation before probate, general and appellate courts. He previously conducted high stakes complex business litigation before juries, courts, appellate and arbitration panels, and negotiated settlements. Mr. Samet has been practicing law for more than 44 years and he consistently brings an advocate’s skill, common sense judgment, energy and sense of humanity to his practice.
In trust, probate and estate matters, he has represented petitioners and respondents, trustees, beneficiaries and executors. He has represented several of the world’s largest trust companies in several litigations and the beneficiary of a trust involving several hundred million dollars in highly publicized, intensely contested and personal litigation. Among other matters, he has litigated questions of trust interpretation, administration, procedures, probate issues, tax matters and disputes among beneficiaries.
During his several decades of practice, Mr. Samet has represented a wide range of clients engaged in many different fields in disputes involving many different areas of law. His clients have included investors and deal makers, securities professionals, real estate owners, developers and lenders, media, print and broadcast, manufacturers, consumer product providers, lenders, insurance, natural resources, oil and gas, professional service providers, law and accounting firms, individual entrepreneurs and executives, licensors, manufacturers, government agencies, a race track and a stock exchange.
Mr. Samet has successfully argued before the United States Supreme Court in Holmes v. Securities Investor Protection Corporation, which involved RICO and federal securities law. He has successfully handled a corporate insurance takeover litigation involving more than $1 billion and has been lead lawyer in a business fraud trial lasting more than seven months.
He has been Chairman of the Litigation Group of two large Southern California law firms and was on the governing body of each of them. Mr. Samet is an author of seven published articles relating to subject matters of litigation practice. He has been retained as an expert witness in numerous cases relating to questions of professional conduct by other lawyers. Mr. Samet has been counsel of record and participated in more than 20 matters which are the subject of officially reported and published judicial decisions of courts of general, probate and appellate jurisdiction.
Mr. Samet has been head of the California offices’ Litigation Group, in addition to being a former Partner-In-Charge of the Los Angeles Office and former member of the Policy Committee, the governing body of Baker Hostetler. Mr. Samet was an Arbitrator for the NASD and is an approved Arbitrator for the Los Angeles County Court system. In addition, he is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and the Million Dollar Advocates’ Forum.
Mr. Samet is a biographee in Who’s Who in America and has been selected as a Southern California “Super Lawyer” by Law & Politics and the publishers of Los Angeles Magazine annually since this designation was established in 2004.
