NEW YORK, NY—February 26, 2009—The national law firm of Baker & Hostetler LLP has announced that John J. Carney has been named the National Co-Leader of its White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations Practice—which has become one of the preeminent such practices in the country.
In addition to having served as the corporate monitor for Merrill Lynch, The Bank of New York, Mellon Bank and others, the firm’s white collar team has conducted monitoring work and internal investigations for leading corporations. Based in part on this strength, in 2008 Irving H. Picard, Court-appointed trustee in the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, joined Baker Hostetler in New York. Carney will lead the practice jointly with George A. Stamboulidis, who was recently named Managing Partner of the firm’s New York Office.
“In these challenging economic times, now more than ever, companies need experienced attorneys who have sat on both sides of the table to advise on corporate compliance and white collar defense,” said Executive Partner Steve Kestner. “Clients can rely on Baker Hostetler to successfully and efficiently represent their interests. Our track record of integrity and results speaks for itself,” said Kestner. “John Carney has the sophisticated understanding of how business and government work which is essential in serving the litigation, investigation and compliance needs of our clients,” noted Ray Whitman, Baker Hostetler’s Litigation Group Chair.
“John Carney is an effective manager and a proven leader. His business acumen, experience in government and people skills make him ideally suited to lead our white collar team,” said Stamboulidis, the team’s co-leader.
Carney, a former Securities Fraud Chief, Assistant United States Attorney, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Senior Counsel and practicing CPA, focuses his practice in the following areas: Securities Regulatory Enforcement and Litigation Defense, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Compliance and Defense (FCPA), White Collar Corporate Investigations, Monitorships and Government Enforcement Defense, Healthcare Enforcement and Defense and Complex Litigation.
Prior to joining the firm, Carney served as the Chief of the Securities and Health Care Fraud Unit for the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey and for more than 14 years, he served as Senior Counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
