Johnine P. Barnes
Johnine P. Barnes is experienced in various phases of employment law, including litigating and defending administrative claims of harassment; retaliation and discrimination on the basis of age, race, sex and disability; wrongful discharge and breach of contract issues; and client compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act and other federal and state statutes governing employment. She has assisted clients in matters involving labor law, including the Fair Labor Standards Act, as well as analogous state statutes, collective bargaining, grievance arbitration and National Labor Relations Board proceedings.
In addition to her employment and labor experience, Ms. Barnes has experience in various business litigation matters, including non-compete agreements, contract disputes, trade secrets, international disputes, white collar crimes and property interest disputes and legislative matters.
Ms. Barnes is an instructor of the Court Practice component of the Mandatory District of Columbia Bar Course. She has spoken on employment law issues before the District of Columbia Bar, where she has been faculty chair and faculty member of the Bar’s Fair Labor Standards Act continuing legal education course and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association’s business practice and procedures clinic. She also has spoken on diversity issues in the legal profession before the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Conference. Ms. Barnes is a contributing author of Dear Sisters, Dear Daughters: Strategies for Success from Multicultural Women Attorneys, a publication of the ABA’s Commission on Women in the Profession and Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity. She is also the author of “Lawyers, Managers and Agents: An Overview of Their Role,” Inside the Minds: Entertainment and Media Law Client Strategies (Aspatore Books, 2007), and co-author of The Expanding Public Policy Exception to the Employment-at-Will Doctrine.
Ms. Barnes has been a featured speaker on sports-related matters at the American Bar Association Sports & Entertainment Forum Annual Meeting and the American University Washington College of Law Sports and Entertainment Seminar.
Ms. Barnes is active in various organizations and the community. She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Board of Governors and Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. She is also a member of the American Bar Association, the National Bar Association (former Deputy General Counsel and Special Counsel to the President), the Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia (former co-chair of the Working Mothers Committee), the Washington Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association and a past President of the Prettyman-Leventhal American Inn of Court.
Ms. Barnes is a member of the District of Columbia Public Employee Relations Board, which is a quasi-judicial agency that resolves labor-management disputes between agencies of the District government and labor organizations representing agency employees. She is also General Counsel of the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee and a former Commissioner with the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, as well as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Ms. Barnes was named one of Washington’s “40 Top Lawyers Under 40” in the Washingtonian magazine July 2006 edition. Additionally, she has been named a “40 Under 40” leader by Kaleidoscope magazine. Ms. Barnes is the recipient of the Presidential Award by the National Bar Association and the Pathfinder Award of Steubenville High School.
