Joseph E. Ezzie

Joseph E. Ezzie focuses his practice in the areas of class action defense and complex commercial litigation. He has handled a variety of litigation matters, including commercial matters, the defense of professional negligence actions, trade secrets, class actions, construction cases and patent disputes. He has a broad base of litigation experience, including trial and appellate practice, original investigation of claims, injunctive relief and complex discovery.

Most recently, in class actions, Mr. Ezzie has been responsible for discovery issues involving a complex case in Indiana and a major Ohio case on behalf of a leading property and casualty insurer. These cases have required him to handle all depositions, as well as respond to issues involving client responses to discovery requests. Mr. Ezzie also successfully obtained the early dismissal of a class action in Tennessee prior to class certification.

Mr. Ezzie regularly represents his clients in commercial disputes, resolving them largely through negotiations or mediation and, when necessary, through trial. He is part of a team that represents a major healthcare client in the collection of past due accounts. In addition, Mr. Ezzie was a team member in a case involving a major healthcare client which was placed on an accelerated docket calendar. He assisted the client in defending depositions scheduled on short notice and was instrumental in helping frame issues used in successful mediation of the case.

Beyond commercial and complex litigation matters, Mr. Ezzie has also represented clients in patent litigation. He has been responsible for the briefing of issues for Markman hearings, has drafted and argued jury instructions for patent litigation matters and has taken and defended depositions in a wide variety of patent cases.

Mr. Ezzie was named a 2010, 2011 and 2012 Super Lawyers “Rising Star” in Ohio. He sits on the Board of Directors of Central Ohio Crime Stoppers and is involved with the City Year Columbus Young Heroes program. He is a past participant in Leadership Columbus (2007).

Mr. Ezzie is a member of the Columbus, Ohio State and American Bar Associations.
