Joseph L. Manson III

Mr. Manson represents the firm's clients in complex labor arbitrations, federal court litigation, contract negotiations, union organizing campaigns and related administrative proceedings. He has negotiated employment contracts and litigated unjust discharge claims. Mr. Manson has handled cases reaching the Supreme Court on such diverse matters as employee rights arising out of business combinations, employer rights to permanently replace economic strikers, and the scope of the initial post-certification collective bargaining obligation.

Mr. Manson also represents U.S. interests in international transactions and government relations matters in Asia, and foreign interests in international transactions and government relations issues in the United States.

A sampling of Mr. Manson's significant cases follows:

  • Representation of a publicly traded German company in an effort to acquire equity in a major U.S. entertainment company.
  • Representation of a Korean telecom company in its efforts to assemble a consortium of international partners for a direct broadcast satellite project in Korea.
  • Counsel to a major U.S. cargo carrier in its effort to resolve commercial issues in Malaysia.
  • Negotiation of complex labor agreements for several major U.S. airlines and foreign airlines.
  • Representation of major Asian airlines in developing strategy to acquire equity in U.S. carriers.
  • Representation of two large chemical companies with respect to compliance with trade regulation legislation in Thailand.
  • Representation of numerous hotels in successfully resisting union organizing campaigns and defending unfair labor practice charges.
  • Successful defense of several companies and their top officers in employment discrimination cases.
  • Preparation of amicus curiae briefs for major trade associations in appellate litigation before the U.S. Courts of Appeals.
  • Successfully argued case arising from a major railroad merger before the U.S. Supreme Court resulting in a unanimous decision.
  • Advisor to major corporations on labor legislative strategy.

Mr. Manson is a member of the American and District of Columbia Bar Associations, and served as Co-Chairman of the Railway and Airline Labor Law Committee of the American Bar Association (1993 - 1995). He has been a Member of the Faculty of the American Law Institute's and American Bar Association's seminars on Airline Labor Law (1993 - 1995). He currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the Alexandria Youth Sports Foundation, and is on the Board of Directors of Barrow Grocery Co., Inc., Mesa Air Group, and DBM Group. Mr. Manson also is on the Law School Council for the Emory University School of Law, is a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees for St. Stephens and St. Agnes School, and is an International Advisory Board Member of the Thailand Creative & Design Center in Bangkok.

Mr. Manson has had articles published in legal periodicals and served as Senior Editor for The Railway Labor Act, BNA Books (1995).
