Matthew R. Goldman

Matthew Goldman has functioned as lead counsel for debtors, trustees, creditors’ committees and purchasers in the bankruptcy, restructure and liquidation of large and middle market companies across the country.

Mr. Goldman has had extensive experience in steel, automotive, retail, real estate, healthcare, finance and communications bankruptcies and restructures. Prior to joining Baker Hostetler in 1987, Mr. Goldman was senior bankruptcy counsel for Ameritrust Company National Association, a large regional commercial bank, in charge of its legal department bankruptcy and workout group. He also acted as counsel to the Finance Department, and in that capacity established the bank’s financial futures and swap programs and obtained regulatory approval of them.

Mr. Goldman currently acts as lead counsel representing the $2 billion litigation trust for the Extended Stay Hotel bankruptcy. The ESI leveraged buy-out was the largest collapsed CMBS arising out of the “real estate bubble.”

Since 2004, Mr. Goldman has led a team pursuing director and officer responsibility for the collapse of LTV Steel’s bankruptcy case, to this day the largest failed industrial bankruptcy case in American history. After an extensive investigation, Mr. Goldman’s team obtained standing to prosecute a director and officer lawsuit including allegations regarding improper corporate governance conduct and breach of fiduciary duty. The matter has received extensive attention. It is currently a pending litigation.

Mr. Goldman has chaired the Bankruptcy Section of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, as well as its Advisory Committee for the William J. O’Neill Bankruptcy Institute, and was a member of the Bar Association Execution Committee for eight years. Mr. Goldman was co-annotator, with Joseph Patchan, of Clark Boardman’s Federal Rules of Bankruptcy from 1988 through 1991. He has lectured extensively on bankruptcy and commercial law issues, appearing before both trade and professional meetings. Mr. Goldman is A-V rated and is listed in the compendiums of the Best Lawyers in America and Chambers.
