Mike Mumford concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation, with an emphasis on defending class actions filed against the insurance industry and financial institutions. He has considerable experience in defending and counseling insurance companies and financial institutions with respect to rate and discount practices, premium collection practices, claims adjustment practices, residential lending practices, commercial contract disputes, consumer finance compliance, and banking practices.
Mr. Mumford has defended title insurers in class actions challenging discount and other premium programs. In addition, Mr. Mumford has defended several national lending institutions in class actions challenging residential loan underwriting and securitization practices, as well as banking practices related to the transfer and presentment of negotiable instruments. He has particular experience in many facets of the residential mortgage lending industry, including federal lending requirements and title insurance issues.
Mr. Mumford has further defended automobile insurance companies in class actions challenging various aspects of the claims-handling process, including the payment of interest on settlement amounts, the taking of depreciation deductions, and the determination of prevailing auto body repair rates in the claim settlement process.
He has defended the firm’s clients in cases involving the alleged violation of federal and state securities laws, including civil actions brought by the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission. Mr. Mumford has also litigated matters involving professional malpractice, business torts, products liability, mass torts, and employment disputes.
Mr. Mumford is a member of the American, Federal, Ohio and Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Associations, and currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Bar Association, Northern District of Ohio Chapter. He is also a member of the Judge John M. Manos American Inn of Court.
