Carney to Address PLI's "Basics of Accounting for Lawyers 2010"

New York partner John Carney, who serves as co-leader of the firm's national White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations group, has been invited to speak at the Practising Law Institute's, "Basics of Accounting for Lawyers 2010: What Every Practicing Lawyer Needs to Know" conference, to be held July 8-9, 2010, in New York City. Carney is a former Securities Fraud Chief, Assistant United States Attorney, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Senior Counsel and practicing CPA.

Carney's presentation, "Notes to the Financial Statements: The Rest of the Story," will be a practical discussion on using the financial statement notes to understand the financial statements, identify policies or transactions of interest, and enhance assessment of company performance and financial condition.

The conference, designed for the non-accountant attorney, will provide an understanding of the key principles of accounting using "real life" examples of accounting issues that attorneys commonly face. The program will also offers insight into the effective use of financial experts, accounting and financial issues where attorneys can put themselves at risk, and current accounting and business "hot" topics, including:

  • How to read, analyze and understand financial statements: the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows 
  • How the notes to the financial statements tell the story behind the numbers
  • Fraud and other issues in the new financial environment 
  • Update on regulatory enforcement actions 
  • Ethical issues
