DENVER, CO, May 17, 2011—Baker & Hostetler LLP announced today that Richard B. Levin recently joined its Denver office. Levin will focus his practice on the representation of early stage and publicly traded companies in the financial services industry, including broker-dealers, alternative trading systems (ATSs) and exchanges. He will also represent clients before the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), Congress and foreign regulators.
Levin spent the past 12 years on Wall Street, most recently as Director and Global Head of Product Development for Compliance and Operations for the largest German investment bank. Prior to that, Levin played a leadership role in the launch of several ATSs, including serving as General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Secretary to the board of directors of two joint ventures of leading investment banks: EquiLend, the owner and operator of a U.S. agency broker, and a U.K. multilateral trading facility (MTF), and BIDS Trading, a U.S. ATS. In these roles, Levin was responsible for all legal, regulatory and compliance matters, as well as all corporate, merger and acquisition, intellectual property and employment matters. Levin began his career on Wall Street as the General Counsel of one of the original electronic communications networks and as the Assistant General Counsel and Regulatory Affairs Officer of Knight Capital Group, the leading NASDAQ market maker.
“We are delighted to have Richard join our team,” stated Ray Sutton, managing partner of the firm’s Denver office. “Richard’s experience makes him uniquely suited to work with both publicly traded and early stage companies in the financial services industry."
Levin has represented companies before the SEC, FINRA, numerous foreign securities regulators and the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Levin will split his time between the firm’s Denver, Washington, D.C., and New York offices.
“Having worked with Richard for nearly a decade as a client of Baker Hostetler, we are very excited to have him join the firm. He will be an invaluable addition to our team and brings a wealth of experience representing firms on corporate and regulatory matters on a global basis,” said Steven Goldberg, national co-chair of Baker Hostetler’s transaction practice group. “Richard’s expertise in representing mature and early stage broker-dealers, ATSs and MTFs in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia makes him a valuable asset to Baker Hostetler,” added Marc Powers, national leader of Baker Hostetler’s securities litigation and regulatory enforcement practice.
Levin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the Colorado College. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver College of Law, where he served as Managing Editor of the Denver University Law Review.
