Nina C. Liao

Nina Liao joined Baker Hostetler in September 2010. Ms. Liao focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation, assisting clients on matters in state and federal trial and appellate courts, as well as before administrative agencies. Ms. Liao participates in various stages of case development and trial preparation, including pleadings, motion practice, discovery and discovery disputes. She has assisted tobacco manufacturers in an arbitration with 46 states over a $1.2 billion payment in dispute under the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. She also represents clients in pro bono matters before the District of Columbia Landlord and Tenant Court. Previously, Ms. Liao worked on matters in connection with the firm’s appointment as counsel to the SIPA Trustee in the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC. She also provided support to a trial team that obtained a multimillion-dollar jury verdict in New York in a matter involving breach of fiduciary duty and fraud claims.

During law school, Ms. Liao was an Articles Submission Editor on the Minnesota Law Review and the President of the Women’s Law Students Association. Ms. Liao won awards for her writing, worked as a research assistant for Professor Claire A. Hill, clerked at the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and interned at the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. Ms. Liao also studied at Georgetown Law School as a visiting student and studied abroad in Tokyo, where she interned at a Japanese law firm and worked on a research project for the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry.

Ms. Liao earned her B.S. degree in Economics in 2006 from the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to entering law school, she attended Escola Superior de Comerc Internacional in Barcelona, where she studied international trade and language.

Ms. Liao is a member of the New York State and the District of Columbia bars. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
