Stephan J. Schlegelmilch

Stephan J. Schlegelmilch is a member of the firm’s litigation group and focuses his practice in the areas of white collar criminal defense, corporate investigations and commercial litigation.

Mr. Schlegelmilch has represented corporations and individuals in federal grand jury investigations, SEC enforcement actions, Department of Justice investigations and federal prosecutions, both in trial courts and on appeal. His criminal defense experience includes the areas of public corruption, securities fraud, tax fraud, antitrust, healthcare fraud, firearms, gambling, narcotics and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Mr. Schlegelmilch has also conducted internal investigations in the securities, food and drug and insurance brokerage industries, and has provided counseling to clients regarding FCPA matters.

Mr. Schlegelmilch has represented a number of businesses that have been the victim of financial crimes. He has advised and assisted clients regarding reporting the offense, cooperating with local and federal law enforcement officials, interdiction, review and enhancement of internal control mechanisms and restitution.

Mr. Schlegelmilch has broad experience in civil litigation at both the trial and appellate levels. His civil experience includes the areas of construction, breach of contract, business torts and civil rights. He has also successfully defended a sitting state trial judge in a writ of prohibition action before the Ohio Supreme Court.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Schlegelmilch served as law clerk to the Honorable John M. Manos, United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. While in law school, Mr. Schlegelmilch was the Executive Contributing Editor of the Case Western Reserve Law Review.

Mr. Schlegelmilch has written pieces published in the Case Western Reserve Law Review and Cleveland Bar Journal. One of his articles was selected by the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects as the best student-written article in a law review or journal for the year 2000. Mr. Schlegelmilch is an active member of the American, Ohio and Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Associations, and currently serves as a member of the Executive Counsel of the Criminal Law Section of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.
