Susan Whittaker Hughes concentrates her practice in the area of employee benefits and compensation. This includes working with for-profit and tax-exempt employers to design, implement and administer health and welfare, cafeteria, retirement and executive compensation plans. She assists employers with ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, Medicare and Internal Revenue Code compliance issues.
Susan also monitors and advises clients on legislative and regulatory developments impacting employee benefit matters. Most recently, she has been advising clients on their expanded HIPAA privacy and security and COBRA administrative obligations under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and healthcare reform issues.
During law school, Susan served as Business Editor of the Cleveland State Law Review, in which her note, “The Only Americans Legally Prohibited from Knowing Who Their Birth Parents Are: A Rejection of Privacy Rights as a Bar to Adult Adoptees’ Access to Original Birth and Adoption Records,” was published in 2007 (55 Cleveland State L. Rev. 429).
Susan serves on the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law’s Development Council.
