Tom Warren serves as National Co-Chair of the firm’s Appellate Practice Team. Mr. Warren argues appeals and serves in an advisory capacity to the firm’s clients and lawyers on appellate and complex civil litigation issues. An experienced appellate attorney and member of the state bars of California and Ohio, Mr. Warren has handled matters before the Second Circuit, Fifth Circuit, Sixth Circuit, Seventh Circuit, Ninth Circuit, Ohio Supreme Court and United States Supreme Court. He has received numerous commendations for his outstanding appellate skills. His practice also includes strategic analysis and briefing in complex civil litigation matters. Mr. Warren has accepted numerous appointments from the Sixth Circuit to provide pro bono representation to appellants in criminal matters. He has also taught appellate advocacy at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and Cleveland-Marshall Law School in Cleveland and trial advocacy at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
In connection with Baker Hostetler’s role as counsel to Irving H. Picard, Trustee for the substantively consolidated SIPA liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC and Bernard L. Madoff, Mr. Warren has played a central role in case-wide appellate issues, including the proper interpretation of “net equity” under SIPA.
Mr. Warren has been named in Chambers USA as a leading lawyer in the area of commercial litigation and has been named one of The Best Lawyers in America in appellate practice in both California and Ohio. He has been certified as a specialist in appellate law by the Ohio State Bar Association.
Prior to commencing private practice, Mr. Warren served for nine years as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. He served as Chief of the General Crimes Section, supervising the training and development of more than fifty new prosecutors. He also served as Senior Litigation Counsel, arguing numerous appeals to the Ninth Circuit and investigating and prosecuting complex criminal cases. Mr. Warren received numerous awards and commendations for his work as a prosecutor. During his tenure in the United States Attorney’s Office, he never lost a trial.
Mr. Warren graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard College and with distinction from Stanford Law School. At Stanford, he was the Senior Note Editor of the Stanford Law Review and won the Mr. and Mrs. Duncan L. Matteson, Sr., Award in the Marion Rice Kirkwood Moot Court Competition. Upon his graduation from Stanford, he clerked for the Honorable Stephen V. Wilson, United States District Judge for the Central District of California.
