Timothy S. Susanin

Timothy Susanin focuses his practice on corporate internal investigations, the healthcare industry and other regulatory matters, as well as white collar criminal and complex commercial litigation. Since joining Baker Hostetler, Mr. Susanin has been a member of the team serving as counsel to the court-appointed trustee under SIPA in the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Susanin was the General Counsel and a Senior Vice President of WellCare Health Plans, Inc., a FORTUNE 500 managed care company. He was a member of WellCare’s senior executive team and interacted regularly with the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors; managed the lawyers, government affairs and corporate communications employees who comprised the company’s legal department; worked closely with the company’s federal and state government clients; and co-chaired the company’s Management Disclosure Committee and Corporate Compliance Committee.

While at WellCare, Mr. Susanin achieved the resolution of complex and high profile federal and state regulatory and law enforcement investigations. In addition, he was responsible for the settlement of several federal and state investigations of qui tam claims in multiple jurisdictions and resolved related securities class actions. He also collaborated closely with WellCare’s Corporate Monitor.

While in private practice at an American Lawyer Top 200 firm, Mr. Susanin served as Litigation Director and in 2005 was selected to open the firm’s Philadelphia office. His practice focused on commercial litigation, white collar criminal law and corporate compliance, including Sarbanes-Oxley compliance and other investigation matters. Mr. Susanin served as counsel to the corporate monitor of an investment bank and counsel to the court-appointed trustee in a complex SIPA matter.

Mr. Susanin spent six years at the U.S. Department of Justice, serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He is the recipient of awards from the FBI, Secret Service and Naval Investigative Service.

Mr. Susanin served in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 1988 to 1992, where he represented military personnel in criminal charges before military trial courts and at administrative discharge hearings, as well as prosecuted appeals by service members of criminal convictions. On behalf of the United States Solicitor General, Mr. Susanin wrote oppositions to certiorari petitions to the United States Supreme Court filed by convicted service members. He is the recipient of the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal.

Mr. Susanin is a frequent writer and speaker on legal topics. He has provided legal commentary in hundreds of television and radio appearances on such programs as the “Today Show,” “Larry King Live,” “BBC World, “CNN Headline News,” “The O’Reilly Factor” and others. He has also been quoted in numerous articles published by the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Business News, Philadelphia Inquirer, New Jersey Law Journal, among others.
