Wilcox Addresses WebmasterWorld's Search & Internet Marketing Conference
Cleveland partner Deborah Wilcox, co-chair of the firm's Intellectual Property Litigation practice, was invited to be a speaker at the WebmasterWorld's Search & Internet Marketing Conference held November 11-14, 2008, in Las Vegas.
Wilcox spoke on a panel, "Domains and Legal Issues," which addressed all of the aspects surrounding domains, from the simple act of registering a domain to the complex legal issues of domain ownership.
Wilcox's presentation, "A Million Dollar Domain Name Case," recounted a 2007 Florida lawsuit in which the plaintiff made software to record worker hours and to calculate payroll deductions. The defendant was a Canadian company that sold into the United States and made a similar product.
Wilcox detailed the circumstances of the case, which ended with the judge ruling in favor of the plaintiff and the defendant having to transfer the domain name and pay over $1,000,000 in damages and corrective AdWords advertising for seven years.
