WASHINGTON — Feb. 11, 2022 — The nationally recognized Intellectual Property Group at law firm BakerHostetler has marked another successful year with the publication of its Intellectual Property Group 2021 Year in Review. The report highlights important matters and notable successes of the group’s six major teams — Biotechnology, Chemical and Pharmaceutical; Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Science Prosecution; Life Sciences; Patent Litigation; Technology & IP Transactions and Outsourcing; and Trademark and Copyright.
Over the past year, the group has been instrumental in obtaining, enhancing and protecting the IP interests of clients, helping them gain a competitive advantage in numerous industries, including pharmaceutical, medicinal, aerospace, technology, software, energy, entertainment, manufacturing, media, pet food, hospitality, education and insurance, among others. The 2021 Year in Review identifies 41 standout assignments — some with multiple components — where members of the BakerHostetler IP Group provided critical advice and counsel for matters that were key to their clients’ success.
Some examples are:
The Biotechnology, Chemical and Pharmaceutical team worked with a developer of first-in-class small-molecule therapeutics, negotiating several patent option and license agreements with a university for small molecules potentially useful for treating central nervous system disorders, hepatocellular cancer and melanoma.
The Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Science Prosecution team worked with a longtime client and leading integrated manufacturing specialist for performance-critical applications and power products on IP filings that take advantage of research and development tax credits in China.
The Life Sciences team was retained as exclusive global patent counsel for a major supplier of consumer health care products.
The Patent Litigation team achieved numerous notable wins, including before the International Trade Commission in perhaps the most consequential patent case of 2021 in the renewable energy industry.
The Technology & IP Transactions and Outsourcing team represented a tech-enabled consumer analytics firm in data lake configuration and on an analytics software license to analyze billions of dollars in annual promotional spend by a multinational consumer goods company.
The Trademark and Copyright team secured a rare pretrial victory in the Eastern District of Texas for a California-based gift card company, with trial just three weeks away.
“A company’s intellectual property is among its most valuable group of assets in a global economy. BakerHostetler is proud to partner with some of the most sophisticated companies and innovators in the world to strategically provide them with maximum competitive advantage and cover through these assets,” said Mark H.
