Overview

Cara McGourty focuses her practice on complex commercial and bankruptcy litigation. She is a key member of the BakerHostetler team serving as court-appointed counsel to the Securities Investor Protection Act Trustee for the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, an unprecedented effort with a current recovery of more than $14 billion for Madoff’s victims. In this role, Cara has directed case-wide discovery, worked on electronic data preservation and control and is currently litigating the Trustee’s case against a feeder fund. Her practice also includes a long-standing commitment to pro bono work.

Pro Bono

  • Defended client against claims of defamation resulting from her speaking out against sexual misconduct in her profession. All claims dismissed on summary judgment.
  • Participated in the New York City Law Department’s Public Service Program by conducting and taking depositions in torts suits brought against the City of New York.
  • Petitioned for and obtained asylum on behalf of a woman who was persecuted for her political and social beliefs, including kidnapping and torture. Received a pro bono award for work on this matter.
  • Petitioned for and obtained Combat-Related Special Compensation on behalf of a veteran suffering from significant injuries sustained while serving in Iraq, including post-traumatic stress disorder.
