Overview

George Schein focuses his practice on all aspects of employee benefits. This includes working with clients to design, implement and administer health and welfare, retirement, and executive compensation plans, as well as conducting ongoing counseling to address various compliance-related issues. George also works on the employee benefits aspects of corporate acquisitions, dispositions and mergers, in addition to all types of employee communications concerning benefit plans. Placing a high value on teamwork, he works with his clients to address their issues and concerns, and is always responsive to client needs.

George is a well-respected presenter who regularly speaks on the topic of employee benefits for same-sex partners of GLBT employees at seminars and conferences throughout the region. He has also written and published articles on the topic, and has been interviewed and quoted both in print and visual media following the U.S. Supreme Court's Windsor decision that found Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional. George is also currently an active member of the Columbus Chapter of the Human Rights Campaign, and is a past member of the Steering Committee for the Cincinnati Chapter of the Human Rights Campaign.

Experience

  • Negotiates significant third-party administrator and vendor service agreements on behalf of benefit plan sponsors to ensure statutory and regulatory compliance and to achieve effective and efficient benefit plan operations.
  • Counsels clients on appropriate corporate governance structures and assists with training on fiduciary duty obligations.
  • Assisted in the "de-risking" of various traditional defined benefit pension plans involving the offer of lump-sum cash-out payments to employees and deferred vested participants. Advised clients on structure, employee communications and other legal requirements, as well as prepared the plan and corporate documents necessary to offer the lump-sum cash-out payments.
