Overview

Jeff Williams is a litigator with more than 30 years of experience across the United States. Recently, his practice has focused on employment-related class litigation and government investigations, including qui tam actions alleging violations of the False Claims Act.

Jeff concentrates on developing litigation strategies that achieve client-defined goals as quickly and efficiently as possible, including utilizing E-discovery platforms to streamline and contain discovery.

Select Experience

  • Brought claims against construction manager for falsifying asbestos survey and abandoning renovation of power plant resulting in multimillion-dollar settlement on the eve of trial. Also defended concurrent regulatory investigations and enforcement actions arising from the falsification.
  • Defended Fortune 500 client in FLSA collective action potentially involving over 3,000 employees. The action was settled for a nominal amount after the court limited conditional certification to a small subset of the employees.
  • Represented client in multiple separations of C-suite executives accused of misconduct or who claimed age, gender and race discrimination. No lawsuits resulted from the claims.

Experience

Commercial Litigation
  • Brought claims against construction manager for falsifying asbestos survey and abandoning renovation of power plant resulting in multimillion-dollar settlement on the eve of trial. Also defended concurrent regulatory investigations and enforcement actions arising from the falsification.Represented the investment advisory subsidiary of a multinational insurance company in commercial and employment matters. Successfully defended the adviser in California arbitration seeking commissions exceeding $10 million.
  • Defended a registered investment adviser during Securities and Exchange Commission audit and investigation.
  • Defended a Fortune 500 client in an FCA government investigation arising from a qui tam complaint.
  • Successfully obtained $5 million in coverage for a client in international insurance arbitration involving a Bermuda form insurance policy.
  • Obtained preliminary injunctions, retrieved misappropriated trade secrets and negotiated a $1.3 million settlement in a suit against a Fortune 100 competitor for lift-out of a client’s sales organization.
  • Defended an international provider of medical and industrial gases in nine wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits, and related government investigations, arising from an incident in which industrial nitrogen was introduced into the medical gas delivery system of a nursing home.
  • Successfully represented the owner of a national chain of membership camping facilities in a variety of consumer claims, including two putative action lawsuits by the attorney general for the state of Ohio in which class certification was denied.
  • Defended multiple shareholder derivative actions against directors and shareholders of an investment company and other closely held businesses.
  • Represented an international oil and chemical company whose product was destroyed when a 300,000-square-foot warehouse collapsed.
  • Represented a national chain of day care centers in multiple suits involving allegations of sexual and physical abuse of students.
Employment Litigation
  • Defended Fortune 500 client in FLSA collective action potentially involving over 3,000 employees. The action was settled for a nominal amount after the court limited conditional certification to a small subset of the employees.
  • Represented client in multiple separations of C-suite executives accused of misconduct or who claimed age, gender and race discrimination. No lawsuits resulted from the claims.
  • Defended numerous California-based class actions involving various alleged violations of California wage and hour law, including two cases in which class certification was defeated and one that settled pre-certification for the cost of defense.
  • Defended a California-based class action alleging violations of California’s rest break and meal period law.
  • Defended Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charge alleging nationwide racial and gender discrimination. The matter was settled after investigation for nonmonetary consideration.
Probate Litigation
  • Brought a will contest on behalf of family members disinherited under a deathbed will. After two years of litigation before multiple courts, the matter resulted in a settlement valued in excess of $20 million for the family.
  • Defended the will of a family matriarch challenged by two of her adult children involving an estate in excess of $10 million.
