Overview

Michael Holt is a nationally-recognized attorney and corporate executive in antitrust, compliance and maritime law. Having spent over two decades serving as in-house counsel and in other high-level positions for various international shipping corporations, he has a thorough knowledge of relevant corporate, employment, and transportation law. Michael primarily works with clients to develop compliance programs and crisis management plans, preparing clients for potential Department of Justice investigations.

Michael also advises on the design and implementation of insurance programs and company codes of ethics. During his time at NYK Group Americas, Inc. (NGA), his ethics and compliance initiatives earned the company four consecutive rankings as one of the "World's Most Ethical Companies," from the Ethisphere Institute, the global leader in defining and advancing standards of ethical business practices and corporate character. Following his tenure at NGA, he went on to work for TOTE, Inc., creating and implementing their ethics and compliance programs, and subsequently achieving the "World's Most Ethical Companies" distinction on behalf of the company.

  • Responsible for handling all legal aspects of the sinking of a U.S. cargo ship with 33 lives lost, deemed the worst maritime shipping disaster in over 35 years. Settled all fatality lawsuits and over 600 cargo claims within 22 months.
  • Responsible for the antitrust civil litigation involving the actions of the former president and certain employees of a maritime shipping corporation.  Negotiated with the US Army, USPS, and other federal agencies to avoid debarment, and settled the U.S. government’s criminal case against the company and numerous civil cases related to price-fixing.
  • Negotiated the construction contracts for the world’s first ocean containerships to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
