Overview

Miriam Beezy focuses her intellectual property practice on trademark and copyright matters, including U.S. and international procurement, prosecution, transactions, enforcement and disputes. She places an emphasis on commercializing IP, merchandising, brand extension and brand management counseling, as well as IP rights, design protection and enforcement, including online enforcement. Miriam's client experience ranges from high-profile entertainment industry clients to biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry clients. Having previously acted as in-house counsel, Miriam is sensitive to the needs of in-house counsel and the business aspect of all issues, options and ultimate solutions for her clients.

  • Served as chief trademark counsel of The Walt Disney Company, managing the company's worldwide trademark portfolio. Handled intellectual property issues related to consumer products, motion pictures, television, musicals, video, theme parks, sports teams, restaurants, cruise lines, apparel, toys, collectibles and retail stores. Conducted due diligence and handled intellectual property issues associated with the purchase of the baseball team now known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Served as Disney's representative to the Motion Pictures Association of America.
Apparel/Jewelry/Cosmetics Industry
  • Successfully defended a jewelry manufacturer in copyright infringement actions and obtained dismissals. Protected IP and handled copyright ownership agreements.
Chemical/Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Served as trademark counsel to a joint venture in the pharmaceutical industry to expedite the successful global rollout of a new anti-HIV drug. Conducted worldwide clearance and handled protection in nearly 200 jurisdictions worldwide.
Food and Hospitality Industry
  • Protected the IP and developed a successful trademark enforcement program for a popular restaurant chain in California.

  • Successfully developed copyright policies for a healthcare organization for the use of material to be shared through an online portal.

Entertainment and Sports Industry
  • Served as chief trademark counsel of The Walt Disney Company, managing the company's worldwide trademark portfolio.   • Cultivated a prominent entertainment industry client list that includes notable Australian children's musical entertainment group "The Wiggles"; the leading U.S. newspaper columnist, Philips-Van Buren ("Dear Abby"); actress Kelly LeBrock; artists Charles Bragg and Thomas Kinkade; Muhammad Ali; Brandy; Pearl Jam; Ozomatli; Korn; Roseanne Barr; Robert DeNiro's company, Tribeca; Jane Seymour; Wayne Gretzky; well-known film and television production companies; and technology, gaming and promotions companies that serve the entertainment and food industries.
  • Represented the founders/CEOs of a famous semiconductor company in the wireless and broadband communication business in due diligence concerning the potential acquisitions of sports teams.
  • Successfully acquired and transferred a key IP for a famous racing yacht to its new owner. Advised on right of publicity issues for the crew and the use of names, images and personas in a proposed reality TV show.
  • Successfully protected and managed trademarks for the 1960s-revived psychedelic rock group The Electric Prunes.
  • Served as IP counsel to City of West Hollywood marketing and promotions.
