Overview

Ray Burke concentrates his maritime practice on charter party and casualty matters, working with clients domestically and abroad. He has extensive experience advising on the construction of charter parties, and frequently acts as counsel for parties at arbitration. Ray has also handled cases involving collisions, allisions, groundings (and resultant spills), salvage matters, and the litigation or arbitration that flows from them.

  • Involved in obtaining the largest salvage award in U.S. history, including involvement in settlement discussions with the Department of Justice, trial and appeal.
  • Involved in a U.S. Supreme Court case arising out of the fighting in the Falkland Islands that subsequently resulted in the bombing of a neutral oil tanker, Hercules.

Experience

  • Represented the interests of a Philippine-flagged container ship that collided with U.S. Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald off the coast of Japan.
  • Assisted in handling legal aspects of the sinking of a U.S. cargo ship that resulted in 33 lives lost, deemed the worst maritime shipping disaster in over 35 years. All fatality lawsuits and over 600 cargo claims were subsequently settled.
  • Worked on various new construction and ship repair disputes on a worldwide basis.
