Chairman's Outlook

2019 continues to be a strong year for BakerHostetler. Already we have achieved favorable outcomes for our clients in both the litigation and transactional arenas. We recently helped secure Castex Energy Partners a $74 million judgment, which is expected to be one of the largest in Texas this year. And longtime firm client E.W. Scripps Company looked to BakerHostetler to help them acquire eight television stations in seven markets from the Nexstar Media Group, Inc. In addition, the firm has recently been engaged to represent the Tort Creditors Committee in the PG&E bankruptcy. The Tort Creditors Committee represents the victims of the California wildfires. Measured by asset value, the PG&E bankruptcy is the largest-ever public utility bankruptcy and the biggest in California.

In April, BakerHostetler’s privacy and data protection team released its 2019 Data Security Incident Response Report. Now in its fifth consecutive year, this comprehensive report leverages the metrics and insights drawn from more than 750 potential incidents our team led clients through in 2018 and is the only report of its kind produced by a law firm.

We also celebrated a few of our own significant milestones, most notably that our Federal Policy team marked its 30th annual Legislative Seminar in Washington, D.C. Long renowned as the capital’s preeminent opportunity to rub elbows with and gain insights from key lawmakers, this year’s event was particularly star-studded, with a guest appearance from Vice President Mike Pence the evening before. More than 320 clients joined us for the two-day event. Our Orlando office also celebrated its 40th anniversary. What started as our third office through a small combination of nine lawyers has grown to 57 lawyers strong today.

Earlier this month, we were recognized by Chambers and Partners as part of its 2019 Diversity and Inclusion Awards. I am extremely proud that three of our attorneys were selected, one as Minority Lawyer of the Year, one as Future Leader – LGBT+ Equality and another as Highly Commended for Outstanding Ally. An additional five BakerHostetler attorneys were finalists in different D&I categories. We recognize the role of diversity in our ability to provide thorough, nuanced and effective counsel to you, our clients.

While I am proud of our achievements, the only true measure of our success is your success. We look forward to continuing to serve you with energy, commitment and excellence.
