Deborah Wilcox Article Examines the Trademark Implications of Celebrity Nicknames

Partner Deborah Wilcox authored an article that appeared in the May 15, 2016, issue of the INTA Bulletin, published by the International Trademark Association. The article, “What’s in a (Nick) Name: When Celebrity Nicknames Become Trademarks,” discusses fan-generated nicknames for sports heroes and celebrities and notes that celebrities usually move quickly to file trademark applications to protect the marks associated with their names. Wilcox writes, “Filing intent-to-use trademark applications in the U.S. to cover possibly relevant goods and services can be an important step in protecting the client’s brand.”
