Cleveland Summer Program

"My favorite thing about BakerHostetler was if there was anything that I ever wanted to try, all I had to do was ask. All of the partners and associates that I contacted at the firm were willing to help me, to get on a call with me, to figure out how they could help me find the work that I wanted to try. Even though the program was abbreviated, and was on Zoom, people were always willing to be there for me and to give me everything that I needed to know about what I was going to do for the assignments."

– Sarah-Jane Lorenzo, University of Virginia School of Law

The Cleveland Summer Associate Program is 10 weeks long and typically starts mid to end of May and concludes by end of July. During that period, we strive to provide a balance of substantive work assignments, training programs and exciting social events. Our summer class is comprised of predominantly second year law students who are at the top of their law school classes. Over the last several years, we’ve had summer associates from the following law schools: Harvard University, University of Virginia, University of Michigan, Georgetown University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Notre Dame, Emory University, Indiana University, The Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, and Cleveland State University. Our expectation is that each summer associate will receive an offer to join the firm upon completion of law school.

Work Assignments and Trainings

Work assignments are coordinated by one or two associates. Assignments are distributed to summer associates based on their practice areas of interest, capacity, and timing of deadlines. This allows summer associates to explore different practice areas, which they can continue to do as an unassigned associate for their first year following graduation from law school. Constructive and positive feedback is provided throughout the program, directly from the attorneys assigning the work, as well as in formal review meetings at the mid-point and end of the program. In addition to work assignments, summer associates can participate in the following experiences:

  • Trials
  • Client Meetings & Calls
  • Depositions
  • Closings
  • Practice Group Meetings
  • Meet and Greet with
    Federal Judge
  • Mediations
  • Pro Bono Initiatives
  • Arbitrations

Training is a critical component in every attorney’s professional development. Training sessions through the summer program include:

  • Legal Writing
  • Inclusion and Diversity
  • Law Firm Economics
  • Timekeeping
  • Ethics & Professional Liability
  • Practice Group Overview
  • Trial Training 101
  • Respectful Workplace Training
  • Legal Content & Research Services
  • Associate Life Discussion
  • Q&A with Firm Chairman Paul Schmidt
  • Pro Bono Discussion

We have an extensive writing program run by two experienced partners. Following a Legal Writing Workshop held at the beginning of the program, each summer associate will complete two 8-10-page memos that will be reviewed by the hiring committee and for which students will receive detailed feedback on their writing.

Mentoring

Each summer associate is assigned an advisor and mentor. The advisor is an associate that recently went through the summer program and is now practicing in our Cleveland office. He/she meets with the summer associate weekly to review work assignments and answer any questions about the Firm and its practice areas. The mentor is a member of the Hiring Committee and can also answer any questions about the Firm. The mentor and summer associate meet several times throughout the summer program.

Social Events

Our summer program is filled with diverse and exciting social events. Social events provide an opportunity for summer associates to experience the firm's collegial atmosphere and meet lawyers in a relaxed, non-work setting and are key to helping maintain work/life balance. Past events include:

  • Welcome Reception
  • Concerts
  • Broadway Musical at Playhouse Square
  • Taste of Cleveland Neighborhood Tour
  • Cleveland Indians Game in the Firm Suite
  • Golf Outings
  • Kayaking
  • Cooking Class
  • Private Dinner Events
  • Skeet and Trap Shooting
  • Happy Hour
  • Firm Family Cookout

At BakerHostetler, our well-rounded summer program is designed to provide students with the training, experience and confidence necessary to begin the journey to become great lawyers.

The Cleveland office plans to hire 7-10 summer associates including 1-2 first-year students. To apply, please email your cover letter, resume and law school transcript to CLErecruiting@bakerlaw.com.
