Cleveland Summer Program

"From day one, I was given real work on real cases. I was given the resources and the support to get the job done. People showed real interest in what I had to say. And nobody—partner or associate—was ever too busy to talk. I could not have asked for a better summer experience.

I felt like a part of the team from the start. I have never felt that way about any other job. This firm proves that you can have excellence and collegiality at the same time. It is a special place to work."

- Taylor Thompson, 2017 Summer Associate, Current Associate, Harvard University

The Cleveland Summer Associate Program is 10 weeks long and typically starts around Memorial Day and ends in early August. During that period, we strive to provide a balance of substantive work assignments, training programs and exciting social events. Our summer class is comprised of predominantly second year law students who are at the top of their law school classes. Over the last several years, we’ve had summer associates from the following law schools: Our expectation is that each summer associate will receive an offer to join the firm upon completion of law school.

Work assignments are coordinated by two attorneys familiar with the summer program. Assignments are distributed to summer associates based on their practice areas of interest, capacity, and timing of deadlines. This allows summer associates to explore different practice areas, which they can continue to do for their first two years if they join the firm as a full-time associate. Summer associates can expect to attend hearings, client meetings, depositions, closings, practice group breakfasts and luncheons.

We have an extensive writing program run by two experienced attorneys. A writing workshop is conducted at the beginning of our summer program and each summer associate will complete two 8-10 page memos that will be reviewed by the hiring committee. In addition, summer associates benefit from the following selected events: business and litigation training sessions by BakerHostetler partners, a course on law firm economics and advancement, a session on business development/networking, and lunch with the partners who oversee the practice groups in Cleveland, among other events.

Our summer program is filled with diverse and exciting social events. Social events provide an opportunity for summer associates to experience the firm's collegial atmosphere and meet lawyers in a relaxed, non-work setting and are key to helping maintain work/life balance. Past events include a dinner party at the home of the Cleveland office’s managing partner, concerts, a comedy club show, a Broadway musical at Playhouse Square, "Taste of Cleveland" neighborhood tour, skeet and trap shooting, Indians game from firm suite, golf outings, kayaking, a cooking class and weekly softball games against other law firms in Cleveland.

At BakerHostetler, our well-rounded summer program is designed to provide students with the training, experience and confidence necessary to begin the journey to become great lawyers. The Cleveland office plans to hire 13-15 summer associates for the 2020 Summer Associate Program. To apply, please submit your cover letter, resume and law school transcript to Kylie Karpel at
