Cleveland Summer Program

"From day one, I was given real work on real cases. I was given the resources and the support to get the job done. People showed real interest in what I had to say. And nobody—partner or associate—was ever too busy to talk. I could not have asked for a better summer experience.

I felt like a part of the team from the start. I have never felt that way about any other job. This firm proves that you can have excellence and collegiality at the same time. It is a special place to work."

- Taylor Thompson, 2017 Summer Associate, Harvard University

The Cleveland Summer Associate Program is 10 weeks long and typically starts around Memorial Day and ends in early August. During that period, we strive to provide a balance of substantive work assignments, training programs and exciting social events. Our summer class is comprised of predominantly second year law students from the top law schools in the country. Our expectation is that each summer associate will receive an offer to join the firm upon completion of law school.

Work assignments are coordinated by a senior associate. We do not offer a rotation program, but instead, every effort is made to give summer associates work assignments in areas in which they have expressed interest. Summer associates can expect to attend hearings, client meetings, depositions, closings, practice group breakfasts and luncheons.

An extensive writing workshop is conducted at the beginning of our summer program. The writing program is conducted by two partners, both whom serve on the hiring committee. Each summer associate will have two 8-10 page memos over the summer program that will be reviewed by the hiring committee. In addition, summer associates benefit from the following events: business or litigation training sessions from BakerHostetler partners, an appellate writing seminar, a course on law firm economics, a session on business development/networking, and a group coordinators luncheon, among other events.

Our summer program is filled with diverse and exciting social events. Social events provide an opportunity for summer associates to experience the firm's collegial atmosphere and meet lawyers in a relaxed, non-work setting and are key to helping maintain work/life balance. Past events include a dinner party at the home of the Cleveland office’s managing partner, concerts, a comedy club show, a Broadway musical at Playhouse Square, "Taste of Cleveland" neighborhood tour, skeet and trap shooting, Indians game from firm suite, bowling, golf outings, and weekly softball games against other law firms in Cleveland.

At BakerHostetler, our well-rounded summer program is designed to provide students with the training, experience and confidence necessary to begin the journey to become great lawyers who will enjoy their colleagues and their work.
