Seattle Summer Program

The Seattle Summer Program includes first- and second-year law students and is the primary source for recruiting entry-level associates to our office. The majority of our business in the Seattle office is technical in nature, and we encourage interested law students with undergraduate degrees in such disciplines as biotechnology, chemistry, physics, computer science, as well as chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering, to apply to our summer program.

Participants in our unique program enjoy an experience that serves as an introduction to the excitement and intricacies of patent law. Our summer associates do real work for real clients, working closely with attorneys in all aspects of case management, such as drafting patent applications, assisting in patent litigation trial preparation, participating in interviews with inventors, and much more.

Throughout the summer, we offer legal training sessions and patent skills seminars, which provide summer associates excellent learning opportunities. The Seattle summer program ensures that summer associates experience a wide range of cultural and social activities the city has to offer. Some of the summer highlights include a 4th of July fireworks cruise, a Seattle Mariners baseball game, sailing on the Puget Sound, lunch mixers, and partner dinners.

“BakerHostetler’s Summer Associate Program gave me the opportunity to work on a variety of intellectual property issues in scientific fields ranging from nuclear physics to electrical engineering and computer software. All of the attorneys are extremely friendly, helpful and willing to instruct various aspects of the patent prosecution process. I participated in inventor interviews, conducted patent searches, drafted applications, responded to Office Actions from the USPTO and international patent offices, and explored other legal interests in trademark and litigation.

The program is excellent preparation for a career as a patent attorney and has been extremely rewarding. Since day one, I felt welcomed by everyone in the office, and a part of the Seattle team. I’m confident that the experiences and skills I gained during the program will be extremely beneficial to my career and transition to life as an attorney. I truly believe BakerHostetler’s Summer Associate Program is the best choice I could have made.”
