Webinar: Artificial Intelligence at the European Patent Office- Applying the new Guidelines

Events / Monday, October 29, 2018
12:15 - 1:15 p.m.

The current emergence of Artificial Intelligence is often referred to as a Fourth Industrial Revolution, and AI increasingly touches all domains of human activity. Unsurprisingly, the prominence and dynamism of this field are leading to dramatic growth in related patent applications, and it is considered that many of the patents currently being filed are likely to represent seminal developments and define the competitive landscape for a generation. The European Patent Office have recognized this current, and the particular legal and practical problems that it raises for patent applicants under the European Patent Convention, in particular during the Seminar held by the EPO in May this year. On the basis of their experience and these consultations the November 2018 edition of the Guidelines for Examination at the EPO will feature new sections on mathematical methods and Artificial Intelligence.

In this workshop Mark Bell of Marks & Clerk France will present an overview of EPO practice, explore case studies and highlight best practices for drafting and prosecution of successful patent applications before the EPO in the light of the new guidelines.
