NEW YORK, NY – June 7, 2010 – Baker Hostetler announced today that Jonathan New has joined the firm as a Partner in its White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations Practice. Mr. New, who was most recently an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, will be resident in Baker Hostetler’s 120 attorney New York office. Baker Hostetler is widely recognized for its work on government appointed monitorships and trusteeships including Bank of New York Mellon, Merrill Lynch, and most notably, the representation of Irving Picard, the court-appointed trustee under the Securities Investor Protection Act for the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. New served for nine years in a variety of frontline positions in the United States Department of Justice. As an Assistant United States Attorney, Mr. New was the lead prosecutor in the largest mortgage fraud prosecution in the Southern District of New York, resulting in the closure of a corrupt mortgage brokerage and title company, and the convictions of dozens of real estate professionals, bank employees and attorneys. He also investigated and prosecuted complex criminal cases involving bank, mortgage and other commercial fraud, securities fraud, insurance and health care fraud, offshore illegal internet gambling, money laundering, international trafficking in counterfeit goods, racketeering, conspiracy, murder, robbery, obstruction of justice, extortion, alien smuggling and narcotics offenses.

Prior to his tour as an Assistant United States Attorney, Mr. New gained significant civil litigation experience as a Trial Attorney in the Federal Programs Branch of the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice. In that capacity, Mr. New defended federal statutes, policies, regulations and programs of national significance against challenges, including those based upon claims violations of constitutional law. Among his successes, Mr. New successfully defended the United States in a landmark NAFTA litigation, was lead counsel for the Overseas Private Investment Corporation in claims against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and defended numerous federal agencies in a wide range of lawsuits.

"With the addition of Jonathan, not only are we expanding our litigation capabilities, but now have seasoned former federal prosecutors from all three of local United States Attorneys Offices and the major local District Attorney’s Offices," said George Stamboulidis, Managing Partner of the firm’s New York office and co-leader of the national White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations practice.

"We could not ask for a more accomplished and respected litigator in both the criminal and civil arenas than Jonathan to join the White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations team," said John Carney, co-leader of Baker Hostetler’s national White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations practice. "Like Jonathan, many members of our team hail from distinguished careers in government. This depth of experience has proven invaluable in representing clients in disputes with federal and state agencies."

"We are very happy to be able to add an experienced and talented litigator like Jonathan to our team," said Ray Whitman, Group Chair of the firm’s national Litigation Group. "We continue to build on the strengths of our practice through the talents of lateral recruits of Jonathan’s caliber, whose experience will further enhance the services we can provide to clients, not only in New York, but across the firm."
