Alan Friel Comments on Likelihood of Federal Data Protection Legislation

Partner Alan Friel is quoted in an article published by Global Data Review on Sept. 19, 2018. The article, “California Close to Unprecedented IOT Legislation,” reports on a California bill that would establish baseline cybersecurity standards for all internet-connected devices by 2020. As individual states begin to enact privacy and data protection laws, Friel commented on the potential for federal legislation, telling the publication, “As California, Illinois and other states continue to add privacy and data protection laws, creating a patchwork of overlapping and potentially conflicting laws, the appetite in Congress for an omnibus federal standard that pre-empts state laws may develop.”
