BakerHostetler Joins Newly Formed PTAB Bar Association as Seed Funder

News / October 11, 2016

BakerHostetler will participate as a seed funder for the recently formed Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) Bar Association, a new national bar that serves the legal community, the PTAB and other stakeholders.

The PTAB is an administrative-law body of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that decides issues of patentability. It was formed in 2012 as part of the America Invents Act, which revamped U.S. patent law. The PTAB conducts inter partes, post-grant, and covered-business-method patent reviews and derivation proceedings, hears appeals from adverse examination decisions on patent applications and re-examination proceedings, and renders decisions in patent interferences.

“BakerHostetler is honored to join the efforts to establish a bar association focused on the Patent Trial and Appeal Board,” said Dan Goettle, co-leader of the firm’s patent litigation team. “This association presents a great opportunity to share ideas and participate in the evolution of PTAB trial practice.” BakerHostetler has more than 60 patent litigation lawyers across the country, part of its Intellectual Property team of more than 170 attorneys practicing patent, trademark, and copyright law for clients in dozens of industries around the world.

The PTAB Bar Association formally incorporated in June 2016 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The new bar association will provide a forum for communications among the patent litigation industry, PTAB officials, and the Board’s Administrative Patent Judges. In addition, the association will coordinate continuing legal education, pro bono opportunities, career enhancement and scholarship activities in this still emerging practice area.

BakerHostetler is one of several dozen law firms providing seed funding to the new bar association. An inaugural annual conference is planned for March 1-2, 2017, in Washington, D.C.
