Derek Bauer, Ian Byrnside Spearhead Open Records Case that Led to Unmasking of Sexual Abuse of Young Gymnasts

News / January 25, 2018

Partner Derek Bauer is quoted and Partner Ian Byrnside is mentioned in an article published Jan. 25, 2018, in The Daily Report. The article, “Scrutiny of USA Gymnastics Doctor Started with Open Records Fight in Georgia,” explains how Bauer and Byrnside represented The Indianapolis Star in its battle to obtain sealed records in a sexual exploitation lawsuit that involved a young gymnast. That 2016 case eventually spiraled into a nationwide investigation of sexual complaints made against various gymnastics coaches, as well as Dr. Larry Nassar, who was sentenced on Jan. 24, 2018, for sexually abusing 156 young athletes.

Bauer told The Daily Report, “Amazing that this all started with a motion to unseal records in a South Georgia state court, and ultimately led to literally hundreds of young women finding the courage to come forward and make their stories public. I almost never get to see the tangible results of what I do like this.”
