Elizabeth McCurrach Discusses Upcoming NCAA Meeting on College Athlete NIL Rules

News / April 22, 2020

Associate Elizabeth McCurrach is quoted in an article published April 20, 2020, by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal. The article, “NCAA Council Meeting Crucial for Future of NIL,” reports on an April 24, 2020, meeting of college leaders to discuss whether college athletes could be free to sign endorsement deals and appear in commercials as soon as the fall sports season. An NCAA working group has developed a set of recommendations regarding name, image and likeness (NIL) guidelines that will be submitted to the Division 1 Council.

McCurrach, who has monitored NIL legislation closely, told the publication that “One issue that will continue to recalibrate is representation. These bills typically allow for a college athlete to have representation, but where is the university in that? Do they now have a duty to vet these agents representing their athletes? I believe some clear guidance on that will likely come out of the NCAA’s meetings and rules.”
