Eric Packel Offers Insights After Baltimore Ransomware Attack

News / May 21, 2019

Partner Eric Packel is quoted in a Tax Notes article published May 21, 2019. The article, “Taxpayer Information Not Compromised in Baltimore Ransomware Attack,” reports on a recent ransomware virus that infected the city of Baltimore’s network, affecting its telephone system, email accounts, online payment system, parking fines database and real estate transaction system.

Packel told Tax Notes that in ransomware attacks, hackers usually encrypt an Organization’s files until it pays a ransom. The files could contain taxpayer information, although it’s not usually specifically targeted by hackers, Packel said. In ransomware attacks, hackers encrypt the data rather stealing it, so while it is unlikely that taxpayer information would be compromised, it is likely that it would be encrypted.
