The June 17, 2022, edition of The American Lawyer features a commentary by Counsel Lynn Garson on the challenges lawyers face when they need mental health support but don’t know how to ask for it. Titled “The Language of Asking for Help,” Garson’s piece reflects her own continuing journey as an advocate for lawyers who need counseling. She wrote that as the founder of BakerHostetler’s wellness committee, she has often said, ‘If you need help, go get it.’ But after recently speaking with an attorney who lost her job at a big law firm when her work performance suffered because she failed to get help for depression, Garson is now convinced her own prior approach wasn’t enough. “It never occurred to me that I keep giving people a mandate to get help without also giving them the tools to execute it,” she wrote.
