For an article titled “The Cybersecurity Stories That Could Define 2023,” McAndrew told Law360 that he expects cyber extortion groups to keep modifying their tactics. Cyber attackers will do “whatever they can think of to create maximum pressure to drive payment,” he said.
McAndrew was quoted about a spyware case in “4 Cybersecurity Cases to Watch in 2023.” The case involves Salvadorean journalists whose iPhones were hacked, and it raises questions about whether a company creating spyware tools can be held liable when customers use the tools in violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. McAndrew told Law360 that establishing such liability for software manufacturers “could create a new, very broad precedent.”
