Alexander Reid Is Quoted in Tax Notes Regarding New IRS Regulations

On August 16, 2022, Partner Alexander Reid was quoted in Tax Notes in “IRS Releases Final Regs on IRS Disclosure of EO Return Info to States.” Changes to the Pension Protection Act will permit the IRS to share more tax-exempt organization return information with certain appropriate state officers (ASOs); the IRS and Treasury Department took nearly 11 years to finalize the changes. Reid says he believes they took so long because the changes are important. He adds that the potential involvement of ASOs in audits and other matters “may well present useful avenues” for tax controversy professionals representing clients before the IRS. However, he warns, state ASOs could be emboldened to “influence IRS tax administration unfavorably” toward political opponents.
