WASHINGTON – Aug. 19, 2021 – BakerHostetler announced today that Matthew R. Elkin has joined the firm as a tax partner in its Washington, D.C. office. Elkin will be a member of the firm’s tax-exempt organizations and charitable giving team.
Elkin has extensive experience with tax and corporate matters affecting tax-exempt organizations, including trade associations, health care providers, colleges and universities and those engaged in international development and medical research. He regularly advises boards of directors regarding fiduciary duties, conflicts of interest, risk oversight and other governance best practices. Elkin also has extensive experience in complex transactional matters, including the formation of investment funds by both nonprofit and for-profit sponsors, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions and financing and licensing agreements.
“BakerHostetler has a long tradition of advising tax-exempts and the philanthropic community. That tradition, combined with the firm’s reputation in transactional tax matters, will be extremely valuable to my practice, as well as to my clients,” said Elkin. “I am looking forward to joining this national team of exceptionally talented attorneys across the firm.”
Elkin is the second tax partner to join BakerHostetler this summer, following Alex Reid's arrival in July. Elkin and Reid join the more than 70 lawyers in the firm's tax group who help clients achieve their strategic business and financial goals while minimizing taxes.
“Matt’s experience navigating complex matters, especially with respect to both tax and corporate issues in the tax exempt organization sector, will be incredibly valuable to our clients,” said Jeffrey Paravano, chair of the firm’s tax practice group and Washington, D.C. managing partner.
Elkin earned his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law and his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. He received his M.A. from the University of Virginia and his B.A. from Lake Forest College.
BakerHostetler’s tax practice group has attorneys across the firm’s 17 offices. For more than 100 years, these attorneys have helped clients effectively manage one of their most significant costs – taxes – by handling tax controversies and providing them with sound advice and effective practical judgment with respect to federal, international, employee benefits, private wealth, tax-exempt, and state and local tax matters.
