SEATTLE — Oct. 1, 2018 — BakerHostetler announced today that intellectual property trial attorney Douglas Grady will join its national Intellectual Property Group as a partner, resident in the Seattle office. He joins the firm from the Seattle office of Foster Pepper PLLC.

Grady is a well-known IP litigator in the Pacific Northwest, having appeared in more than 75 cases in courts and tribunals across the U.S. involving a wide range of industries and technologies. Beyond his litigation focus, Grady counsels companies on strategic IP asset development and also serves as a special assistant attorney general to Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, advising the state on intellectual property disputes.

Since helping found Foster Pepper’s first IP practice group in 2011, Grady has led large and small litigation teams across the U.S. and internationally. His successful IP litigation matters as team leader include the defense of a popular online real estate company in a patent infringement action in which Grady led a team that invalidated the asserted patent after 10 other companies paid confidential settlements. Grady also served as lead counsel in the successful defense of the worldwide market leader for tunnel-boring machines where his client was granted a full and free license to the asserted patent — even after two other companies (not represented by Grady) admitted infringement and willingly paid damages.

“As innovation storms forward at a constantly increasing pace, our technology clients across the country and internationally require attorneys like Doug who can understand their needs and protect their most vital corporate assets,” said Mark H. Tidman, chair of BakerHostetler’s national Intellectual Property Group. “We are excited to have Doug’s unique blend of technical knowledge and leadership experience in our IP Group.”

“Doug Grady is a smart and timely addition to our national IP practice,” said Timothy D. Casey, partner-in-charge of BakerHostetler’s Seattle office. “We look forward to having him work alongside the rest of our strong IP- and business-focused attorneys, both here in Seattle and around the country.”

“My move to BakerHostetler was all about surrounding myself with a deep bench of hypertalented, client-focused intellectual property lawyers from every corner of the United States,” said Grady. “The support from this extraordinary team will allow me to provide my clients world-class intellectual property services anywhere in the country, at a moment’s notice.”

Grady received his J.D., cum laude, from Seattle University School of Law and was invited to join the editorial staff of the Law Review and the Public Land & Resources Law Review. He received his B.A. in political science and philosophy from Wheaton College. Prior to and while studying law, Grady spent nearly a decade as a mountain guide, where he was responsible for safely leading groups on expeditions to some of the highest peaks across the world.

BakerHostetler’s Intellectual Property Group has more than 180 lawyers who have helped clients in the U.S. and around the world secure and deploy their IP assets for maximum competitive advantage. Many of the firm’s IP attorneys bring experience from outside the traditional law firm setting, including some who have worked as engineers and as in-house patent, trademark and copyright counsel at Fortune 500 companies and in the government. BakerHostetler’s IP practice has received numerous accolades, including being named a “go-to law firm” by Corporate Counsel.
