WASHINGTON, D.C. — Oct. 4, 2018 — BakerHostetler is further strengthening its privacy and data protection team with the arrival of Sarah (Xiaohua) Zhao as a partner in the Washington, D.C. office. The team has added nearly 20 lawyers in the past year to meet evolving client demands. Zhao’s practice focuses on cross-border data transfer issues, privacy and cybersecurity. She joins BakerHostetler from Faegre Baker Daniels LLP.

“China is an important market for many of our clients,” said Ted Kobus, leader of BakerHostetler’s privacy and data protection team. “The addition of Sarah to our team provides us with an opportunity to seamlessly assist our clients doing business in China with insights, experience, and local contacts of a former staff member of the current Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China.” Zhao’s work over the course of her career has resulted in the amendment or abolishment of several Chinese internet and wireless rules.

“We are delighted to be working with Sarah, who bolsters our broad regulatory and transactional capabilities with valuable experience and important contacts in China, including relationships with local counsel in various specialty areas,” said Jeffrey H. Paravano, BakerHostetler’s Washington, D.C. office managing partner.

“BakerHostetler’s impressive privacy and data protection team will be an excellent fit for my clients and my practice,” said Zhao. “All companies, no matter high-tech or conventional, need to be keenly aware of how their data is managed and secured, and the team here is among the strongest. It is a great honor for me to join the team and to add experience and relationships to help clients navigate matters in China and Asia.”

Zhao received her B.A. from Beijing Language and Culture University, her M.A. from Indiana University, and her J.D. from the Valparaiso University School of Law. She also attended the Executive Leadership program at Harvard Business School. She serves on the Steering Committee for Asian Affairs for the Global Forum, an international telecom organization.
