Press Releases / January 30, 2018

HOUSTON, — January 30, 2018 — After 28 years with BakerHostetler, Houston Office Managing Partner Lisa H. Pennington announced her plans to retire on June 30, 2018. She will be succeeded by Litigation Partner Matthew W. Caligur, effective July 1.

Pennington joined BakerHostetler with the 1990 merger with McCutchen, Black, Verleger and Shea, and became Office Managing Partner in 2000, one of the first female office managing partners in the Houston area. During her tenure, the office grew from approximately 35 attorneys to nearly 75 today. She served on the firm’s Policy Committee, its governing board, from 2001 to 2006. She is a member of the firm’s Diversity Committee and was the inaugural chair of the firm’s Women’s Committee.

In 2012, Pennington received the first “Premier Woman in Law” award from the Association of Women Attorneys for being the outstanding female managing partner for an Am Law 100 firm.

“Lisa has been an important voice for BakerHostetler in Houston and across the country and will be missed,” said Chairman Steve Kestner. “In the highly competitive Houston market, Lisa led the office through significant growth and has been a champion for women in the legal profession. I am pleased to have such a strong leader as Matt succeeding her in this important growth market.”

“I have been incredibly fortunate to have been part of this amazing office and law firm for so many years,” said Pennington. “I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished here and look forward to seeing more great things under Matt’s leadership.”

Caligur joined BakerHostetler in 2003, was elected Partner in 2009, and for the past four years has served as the Litigation Practice Group Coordinator for the Houston office. He brings a wide range of experience handling international trade, complex commercial litigation and product liability matters for clients in a variety of industries, with an eye to efficiently resolving complex disputes in accordance with the client’s business objectives.

Caligur is a Chambers USA: Recognized Practitioner: Nationwide International Trade: Customs (2016). He received his B.A. and M.S degrees from University of North Texas in 1989 and 1991, respectively, and his J.D. from South Texas College of Law, 2001, summa cum laude.

“I am honored to have been selected for this important role and to follow in Lisa’s trailblazing footsteps,” said Caligur. “I look forward to building on the tremendous litigation, business, employment and labor and energy practices that are the foundation of this office as we continue to deliver outstanding service and value to our clients in Houston, across the country and around the globe.”
