HOUSTON AND WASHINGTON, May 15, 2015 — BakerHostetler is proud to announce that Partners Laura J. McMahon and María Coor were recognized on the 2015 list of “Latin America’s Top 50 Female Lawyers” by Latinvex magazine, a leading Latin American business publication. The editorial staff selects the top female lawyers specializing in Latin America by looking at nearly 100 international law firms. Latinvex chose 50 attorneys from 33 different firms based in the United States and the United Kingdom.
“We are thrilled that Laura and María have earned this recognition by Latinvex for the outstanding work they have accomplished in Latin America,” said Ray Whitman, Chair of the Litigation Group. “Both provide the firm’s clients with leadership and expertise in cross-border matters that span business, energy, white collar, regulatory and environmental issues.”
McMahon was selected in two categories — Banking & Finance and Energy. She focuses her practice on serving multinational clients in various industries across Latin America in the acquisition and disposition of assets and stock of companies, formation of joint ventures and consortiums, and bidding on governmental or state-owned companies’ projects. She has worked in the region for over 24 years, representing public and private companies as well as family-owned businesses in a variety of transactions throughout Latin America. McMahon’s fluency in Spanish and Portuguese is an asset in providing counsel to clients in these cross-border transactions. McMahon has been named to the list in each of the three years it has been published. She also has been named one of “Latin America’s Top 100 Lawyers” for three consecutive years.
Coor was singled out in the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) category. A native Spanish speaker and fluent in Portuguese, she represents clients in investigations and disclosures involving FCPA compliance and enforcement. Coor counsels clients with foreign operations, particularly in Latin America, including working with Brazilian affiliates of U.S. corporations to address FCPA compliance issues both proactively and in a remedial context. In addition to her FCPA work, Coor also counsels clients with operations in Latin America regarding environmental matters, including compliance issues and due diligence for international corporate acquisitions. Coor is a contributor to BakerHostetler’s Environmental Law Strategy blog, providing insight into the latest environmental developments in the energy, natural resources, chemicals and agricultural biotechnology industries. This is the second consecutive year Coor has been named to this list.
The Latinvex criteria for selection includes regional and local prominence, prominence of the law firm, and awards and recognition from such sources as Chambers and Partners. Latinvex, based in Miami, focuses on Latin American news in the legal, technology and energy sectors.
